Three sentenced to life imprisonment in 2018 Sonbhadra dowry death case

A court in Sonbhadra on Wednesday sentenced three people, including the husband of a woman, to life imprisonment in an eight-year-old dowry death case, a lawyer said.
Additional Sessions Judge Vipin Kumar also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on each convict. Those unable to pay the fine will have to undergo an additional three months in jail, he said.
Government counsel Satyaprakash Tripathi said Chhotak, a resident of the Marihan police station area in Mirzapur district, had filed a complaint at Karma police station on November 4, 2018, alleging that his daughter Aasma was killed by her husband Afroz, mother-in-law Safia and brother-in-law Naseem.
According to the complaint, Aasma was married to Afroz, the son of Mannan Khan, who lived in Pagia village under the jurisdiction of Karma police station in Sonbhadra.
Tripathi said the complaint alleged that the three accused set Aasma on fire on the night of November 3, 2018, after a demand for Rs 50,000 as dowry was not met.
Police registered a case following the complaint and carried out an investigation. After gathering sufficient evidence, they filed a charge sheet against the accused, the government counsel said.
After hearing the matter, the court held all three accused guilty and awarded them life imprisonment, Tripathi said. (with inputs from PTI)
