Supreme Court seeks action reports on illegal buildings, summons senior MCD officials

The Supreme Court has sought detailed action reports on illegal and unsafe buildings across the country and summoned senior officials of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to appear before the court in connection with the matter.
The court is examining concerns related to unauthorised constructions, violations of building regulations and the failure of civic authorities to take timely action against unsafe structures.
The Supreme Court has asked authorities to submit reports detailing steps taken against illegal constructions, including enforcement measures such as sealing, demolition and other action permitted under the law.
The matter gained significance following concerns over building collapses and alleged lapses by civic bodies in preventing unauthorised constructions. Earlier reports highlighted allegations that the MCD failed to take effective action despite repeated violations at certain sites in Delhi.
The apex court has emphasised the need for accountability and effective implementation of building safety norms to prevent risks to public life. Senior MCD officials are expected to explain the steps taken to identify and address unsafe structures.
