Sujith’s double gold inspires visually impaired community

From a remote village in Kerala to competing on an international stage, Sujith’s journey in athletics is one marked by determination and courage. Hailing from Thrissur, the visually impaired athlete was identified for his talent during the National Games in Odisha in 2022 by his coach, Amarjeet Kumar. Born into a family of farmers and with less than 50 per cent vision, Sujith competes in the T13 category. Recognising his potential, Amarjeet ensured that the young athlete moved to Delhi to train professionally by supporting him despite his modest financial background.
Years of rigorous training led Sujith to clinch two gold medals — in the 100 metres, clocking 11.53 seconds and in the long jump with a leap of 6.28 metres. His achievement not only elevated his profile in para athletics but also gave a significant boost to the visually impaired sporting community in the country.
Despite the success, Sujith is determined to beat his own records, his personal best stands at 11.50 seconds in the 100 metres and 6.88 metres in the long jump — marks he is eager to surpass in the coming competitions. With the Asian Games scheduled for the end of 2026, the young athlete is seen as a strong medal prospect for India.
His coach Amarjeet Kumar, however believes the journey has only just begun for Sujith, he emphasised the need for sponsorship support to provide Sujith with access to a physiotherapist, sports masseur and psychological counselling to help him cope with the pressures of elite sport.
