Speeding SUV kills 74-year-old on morning walk in Nagpur; three detained
A 74-year-old man out for his morning walk was killed after a speeding SUV hit him in Maharashtra's Nagpur city on Sunday, August 30, police said.
The incident took place around 5.30 am on Japanese Garden Road in the Civil Lines area, less than a kilometre from the Maharashtra chief minister's official residence, they said.
The victim, identified as Kailash Sondia, a resident of Awasthi Chowk, suffered serious head injuries and was rushed to a government hospital, where doctors declared him dead, police said.
According to preliminary information, the SUV had three occupants when it hit Sondia, who was walking near Japanese Garden.
The SUV driver, Tushar Kakde, and two passengers, Yash Shinde and Himanshu Raut, have been detained, police said. A case has been registered against Kakde on charges of culpable homicide.
One of the SUV passengers was injured in the accident, they said.
Eyewitnesses told police that three cars were speeding in the area when one of them hit the victim.
Police are investigating whether the SUV occupants were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, Gittikhadan police station inspector Saran Mirashi told PTI.
Officials are also verifying whether more people were travelling in the SUV and whether the occupants had consumed liquor.
Police will question eyewitnesses and examine CCTV footage along the route to establish the circumstances leading to the accident and determine whether other vehicles were involved or if the cars were racing or speeding, Mirashi said.
The investigation is underway.
