Speaker inaugurates smart classrooms at MCD school
Delhi Assembly Speaker and local MLA Vijender Gupta on Saturday inaugurated newly constructed smart classrooms at the Delhi Municipal Corporation School in Rohini Sector 8, stressing that technology in classrooms should be used to “unlock the potential of children” and restore confidence in public education.
The event was attended by the Leader of the House in MCD Pravesh Wahi, Education Committee chairman Yogesh Verma, senior civic officials, school heads, teachers, RWA members, parents, and students.
Addressing the gathering, Gupta highlighted the urgent need to revitalise municipal schools, noting that their number has dropped from about 2,000 to around 1,500, while student strength has declined from nine lakh to 6.58 lakh.
Gupta expressed concern over the growing preference for private schools, calling it a reflection of waning public trust in government education. “Education in municipal schools is free and foundational. By introducing smart classrooms and improving learning environments, we can rebuild that trust,” he said.
He also urged teachers, school administrations, and resident welfare associations to play a more active role in transforming the education ecosystem. “Community participation is key to change,” he said.
During the function, students performed a skit on cleanliness and civic responsibility, which drew appreciation from the audience. Gupta used the occasion to appeal to citizens to take a collective pledge against littering, saying that cleanliness was a “shared civic duty.”
Verma and Wahi reaffirmed the MCD’s commitment to modernising schools and integrating technology in education. Officials said the new smart classrooms would serve as a model for upgrading other municipal schools across Delhi.
