SC to hear Meenakshi Natarajan’s plea against Rajya Sabha nomination rejection

The Supreme Court is set to hear a petition filed by Congress leader Meenakshi Natarajan challenging the rejection of her nomination for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections from Madhya Pradesh. However, the court has not granted any stay on the election process or results.
Natarajan approached the apex court after her candidature was rejected during scrutiny by the Returning Officer, a decision that has triggered a political and legal dispute ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls scheduled later this month.
According to reports, her nomination was rejected on grounds of alleged non-disclosure of material information in her affidavit, including details of a pending legal case. The decision has been strongly contested by the Congress party, which has called the rejection “legally unsustainable” and politically motivated.
The issue has already reached multiple forums, including the Election Commission, where Congress leaders submitted representations seeking reversal of the Returning Officer’s decision. The party has maintained that there is no valid criminal case against Natarajan and has accused authorities of misinterpretation of disclosure requirements.
Now, with the matter reaching the Supreme Court, the legal battle is expected to continue alongside the ongoing Rajya Sabha electoral process.
While the court has agreed to hear the plea, it has clarified that there will be no immediate stay on the election results, allowing the scheduled voting process to proceed.
The controversy has added further tension to the already closely watched Rajya Sabha elections in Madhya Pradesh, where seat calculations and cross-voting concerns are being closely monitored by political parties.
The case will be heard by the Supreme Court in the coming days, and its outcome could have implications for the interpretation of nomination scrutiny rules and disclosure norms in parliamentary elections.
