Protein supplements can be risky: Dr Sahni

The growing craze for gyms and fitness is attracting young people toward supplements at a rapid pace. However, experts warn that using certain supplements without proper research and verification can pose serious health risks.
According to Dr Kartik Sahni, Founder and Gastroenterologist at Sahni Gastro & Liver Care, Shakti Nagar, not every protein supplement available in the market is safe. Some products may contain substances that are not even disclosed on their labels. These may include anabolic steroids, heavy metals, and other hepatotoxic chemicals that can cause severe liver damage.
Dr Sahni stated that if a person experiences symptoms such as fatigue, loss of appetite, acidity, yellowing of the eyes, or any other unusual signs after taking supplements, they should immediately stop using the product and consult a medical specialist.
One such case involved a 28-year-old fitness enthusiast who started consuming a protein supplement on the recommendation of his gym trainer. Initially, he noticed rapid muscle growth and improved performance. However, within a few weeks, he began experiencing persistent fatigue, reduced appetite, acidity, and yellowing of the eyes.
Medical tests revealed significantly elevated liver enzyme levels. Further investigations found that the supplement he was consuming contained undisclosed anabolic steroids and liver-damaging chemicals. As a result, he developed chronic liver damage.
Dr Sahni advised consumers to purchase supplements only from trusted and certified brands, verify third-party testing certifications, and avoid compromising their health in pursuit of rapid body transformation.
He emphasised that the cost of fast transformation is often paid by the body’s vital organs.
“Muscles can be rebuilt, but liver damage may not always be completely reversible,” Dr Sahni said.
