PM Modi urges States to resolve water disputes through cooperation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged states to resolve inter-state water disputes through cooperation, timely clearances and technology-based monitoring, saying the Ken-Betwa river-linking project should serve as a model for the country.
Chairing the 51st PRAGATI meeting, the Prime Minister reviewed seven major infrastructure projects worth around Rs 30,000 crore across the railways, power and road sectors spanning nine states.
During the review of the Ken-Betwa river inter-linking project, Modi stressed the importance of mission-mode execution and coordinated efforts between states and agencies. He encouraged states to explore similar projects involving river-linking, groundwater recharge, water conservation and efficient irrigation for ensuring long-term water security.
The Prime Minister observed that delays in implementing public infrastructure projects not only escalate costs but also deprive citizens of timely access to essential services and facilities.
Reviewing projects in the power sector, Modi emphasised accelerating rooftop solar adoption in urban areas, residential colonies and public institutions. He said rooftop solar projects should be implemented in mission mode to lower electricity costs, improve energy security and promote clean energy.
While discussing road and port connectivity projects, Modi said the Vadhavan Port project should emerge as a model for integrated multi-modal infrastructure. He stressed the need to connect the port seamlessly with coastal shipping, inland waterways, freight corridors, railways, highways and airports.
The Prime Minister also reviewed the implementation of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 and directed states to ensure measurable outcomes through better monitoring, citizen participation and coordination among stakeholders.
He further instructed states to expedite solid waste management infrastructure, including waste processing units and GOBARdhan plants.
Modi also highlighted the innovative use of canal networks, including installing solar panels over canals and along canal routes to generate clean energy, reduce evaporation losses and optimise land use.
Cabinet Secretary TV Somanathan informed the meeting that a system for monthly review of social sector schemes at the state level has now been operationalised to ensure faster implementation and accountability.
