PM Modi urges citizens to make Census 2027 a success

Underlining the importance of the ongoing Census exercise in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the ongoing process is not just a Government task but a responsibility of all citizens and participation of everyone is vital.
In his monthly radio address ‘Mann Ki Baat’, Modi also assured the people that all information provided by them during the Census will remain secure and confidential, and appealed to all citizens to participate in the process and make the Census 2027 a success.
“Friends, the national Census is not just a Government task; it is a responsibility for all of us. Your participation is vital. The information you provide remains completely secure and confidential, protected by robust digital security,” he said.
The prime minister said the Census is a very important campaign currently underway in the country, and every Indian must be aware of it. He also noted that the Indian Census exercise is the largest such exercise in the world.
“Census 2027 has been made digital. All information is being recorded directly through digital means,” he said. Modi said the personnel visiting people’s homes are equipped with a mobile app, and they will speak to everyone and enter the information right there.
“Friends, your participation in this Census has also been made easier. You can now record your information yourself. A self-enumeration facility will be available to you 15 days before the official visit. You can fill in the details at your own convenience,” he said.
Once completed, the applicant will receive a unique ID via mobile or email, he said. “Later, when the official arrives at your home, you can simply show this ID to confirm your details,” he said.
Modi said this eliminates the need to provide information twice, saving time and making the process seamless. He said in States where self-enumeration has been completed, the work of house-listing by Census officials has already begun. So far, the house-listing for approximately 12 million (1.2 crore) families has been completed, he said. Modi said for those who have been through this process before, their experience this time is going to be different.
In his address, the Prime Minister hailed as a “historic milestone” the Kalpakkam fast breeder reactor achieving criticality, and said Indian nuclear scientists have brought glory to the country.
He said Indian scientists are advancing the civil nuclear programme and their efforts are making a significant contribution to nation-building.
In a landmark achievement for India’s nuclear energy programme, the 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) has successfully attained first criticality (start of controlled fission chain reaction) on April 6, marking a historic step in providing long-term energy security and advancing indigenous nuclear technology capabilities.
Fast Breeder Reactors are a cornerstone of India’s long-term nuclear strategy. Unlike conventional thermal reactors, the PFBR uses Uranium-Plutonium Mixed Oxide (MOX) fuel.
The reactor is designed to eventually use Thorium-232 in the blanket. Through transmutation, Thorium-232 will be converted into Uranium-233, which will fuel the third stage of India’s nuclear power programme.
In his address, the prime minister also paid tributes to Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore ahead of his 165th birth anniversary. Modi said he was not only a great writer and thinker, but also shaped many renowned institutions.
On May 9, on the occasion of ‘Pochishe Boishakh’ (25th day in the first month of the Bengali calendar), the country will celebrate Gurudev Tagore’s birth anniversary, Modi said.
“Gurudev was a multifaceted personality. He was not only a great writer and thinker, but also shaped many renowned institutions,” Modi said. According to the prime minister, Tagore also advocated for industries that provided sustainable employment and benefited villages.
In his monthly radio address ‘Mann Ki Baat’, Modi also hailed an organisation in Chile promoting the teachings of Lord Buddha, which he said are relevant even now and are essential for the future.
Highlighting that many festivals were lined up in April and May in different parts of the country, he said the upcoming Buddha Purnima (May 1) inspires everyone to enhance peace, embrace compassion and move forward with balance.
Noting the growing popularity of Indian cheese globally, Modi stated that the Indian dairy sector is undergoing a major transformation.
The prime minister informed that two Indian cheese brands received prestigious awards at an international cheese competition held in Brazil, stating that this achievement was widely discussed on social media, and many people have said that the diversity of cheese in India should also be discussed.
Modi urged people to purchase at least one bamboo product from the Northeast, saying such efforts will encourage those who toil hard to make them.
The prime minister also said that, according to the law made by the British, bamboo was defined as a tree, and the rules associated with it were very strict. He said it was very difficult to transport bamboo anywhere, and as a result, people here started moving away from bamboo-related businesses.
The prime minister said that by changing the law in 2017, his Government removed bamboo from the tree category and put it in the grass.
The Prime Minister also informed that India has achieved a major milestone in wind energy, with the country’s wind energy generation capacity exceeding 56 gigawatts.
