Two engineering students swept away in Godavari after Ganesh immersion, one dead

A Ganesh immersion celebration turned tragic in Maharashtra's Nanded district on Sunday after two engineering students were swept away by strong currents in the Godavari river. One of them drowned, while the other remained missing, police said.

The students were part of a group from Matoshri Pratishthan Mahavidyalaya at Wadi Pati that had gone to Kaleshwar on the riverbank to immerse a Ganesh idol, an official from Nanded rural police station said.

Once the idol had been immersed, the students entered the river to swim. Two of them were caught in the strong current and swept away, according to the official.

The students were identified as 18-year-old Bajrang Yedure and 20-year-old Deepak Solunke.

Police said the body of one student has been recovered. Efforts are continuing to locate the second student.  (with inputs from PTI)
