Mumbai imposes 20% water cut for commercial, industrial units as reservoir levels fall

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a 20% reduction in water supply to industrial, commercial and sports establishments as Mumbai faces a growing water shortage due to delayed monsoon rains.
The decision comes after water levels in the seven reservoirs supplying the city dropped to just 10.35% of their total capacity.
In addition to the supply cut, the civic body has suspended water connections to construction sites and swimming pools and has put a temporary hold on approving new construction-related water connections.
Officials said the measures are aimed at conserving drinking water until reservoir levels improve with the arrival of sufficient rainfall.
Mumbai had already been under a 10% water cut since May 15, but continued heat and a delayed monsoon have accelerated the depletion of water reserves.
Authorities have urged institutions and businesses to use alternative sources such as borewells, tankers and treated wastewater for non-potable purposes.
The BMC has also warned of strict action against the misuse or wastage of drinking water.
