2020 Delhi riots: Court allows Tasleem Ahmad to travel to Asansol for son's shooting event
A Delhi court on Wednesday allowed Tasleem Ahmad, an accused in the case concerning an alleged larger conspiracy behind the 2020 northeast Delhi riots, to travel to Asansol in West Bengal to accompany his son to a shooting competition.
Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai permitted Ahmad to travel from September 22 to September 26 for the event scheduled on September 24.
"The applicant, Tasleem Ahmad, is allowed to travel to Asansol, West Bengal, from September 22, 2026, to September 26, 2026, with the condition that he will not talk to the media with regard to the present case," the court said.
The court also directed Ahmad not to come in contact with anyone other than participants and organisers of the competition and barred him from visiting any place other than Asansol during the permitted period.
Ahmad had sought permission to make the trip to accompany his son to the shooting competition. He submitted his Aadhaar card, the official notice for the event and his son's admit card along with the application.
The prosecution opposed the plea but said that if permission was granted, appropriate conditions should be imposed.
After considering the submissions, the court allowed Ahmad's application subject to the specified restrictions.
Ahmad, Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam and several others have been booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and provisions of the Indian Penal Code in the case relating to the alleged larger conspiracy behind the February 2020 riots in northeast Delhi.
The riots broke out amid protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC), leaving 53 people dead and more than 700 injured.
The Supreme Court on May 22 granted interim bail for six months to Ahmad and another accused, Abdul Khalid Saifi, subject to conditions including a bar on speaking to the media or making social media posts about the case.
A bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and P B Varale imposed the conditions while granting the interim bail.
