Mid-Day meal workers launch statewide strike in Himachal, demand better pay and social security

Mid-day meal workers across Himachal Pradesh went on a statewide strike, demanding higher wages, timely payment of honorariums, and improved social security benefits, according to officials and union representatives.
The protesting workers, who are engaged in preparing and serving meals in government schools under the Mid-Day Meal Scheme, said they have long been working under low wages, delayed payments, and lack of job security. The strike affected meal services in several schools across the state as workers joined demonstrations in support of their demands.
Union leaders said the key demands include regularisation of services, minimum wage parity, pension benefits, insurance coverage, and implementation of court directions related to fair remuneration. They also sought recognition as government employees and improved working conditions, including leave benefits and medical support.
Workers alleged that despite performing essential duties linked to child nutrition and education, they continue to face financial hardship and social insecurity. They warned that the protest would continue if the government fails to address their long-standing grievances.
The Mid-Day Meal Scheme, one of India’s largest school nutrition programmes, employs thousands of workers in Himachal Pradesh, many of whom depend solely on the honorarium as their primary source of income.
Authorities have not yet issued an official response to the strike, while discussions between worker unions and state representatives are expected.
