MCD begins encroachment removal drive around Delhi's historic Jama Masjid

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Monday started a demolition and encroachment removal drive in the Jama Masjid area, following directions from the Delhi High Court to identify illegal constructions and clear encroachments around the historic Mughal-era monument, officials said.

An MCD team began clearing public spaces and parks that had been occupied by encroachments in and around Jama Masjid in the morning, a senior civic official said.

"Encroachment of public places and parks was done, which is being removed around the monument," the official said.

Another senior official said at least three parks in the area were being cleared as part of the drive.

The action followed a Delhi High Court order directing the MCD to survey illegal constructions and encroachments in and around Jama Masjid and take necessary steps to remove them.

MCD teams reached the area in the morning and started removing structures and other encroachments from public spaces surrounding the monument, officials said.

"There is an encroachment drive near Jama Masjid by authorities. We have provided adequate security to ensure there is no breach of law and order," a senior officer said.

Jama Masjid is among Delhi's major Mughal-era landmarks and draws a large number of visitors and worshippers. The lanes surrounding the monument are also a busy commercial area. 

Officials said Monday's action was part of the follow-up to the High Court's directions on removing encroachments and illegal constructions in the area around the monument.  (with inputs from PTI)
