LG pushes Khan Market upgrade, reviews rainwater harvesting network

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Sardar Taranjit Singh Sandhu has directed officials to expedite ongoing redevelopment works at Khan Market. He also ordered to complete pending rainwater harvesting projects before the onset of the monsoon, while maintaining strict quality and safety standards.
During a visit to Khan Market, one of the Capital’s most prominent commercial destinations, the Lieutenant Governor reviewed the progress of infrastructure improvement works and interacted with shopkeepers, visitors, and officials. NDMC Chairman Keshav Chandra, Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal, and senior officers accompanied him during the inspection.
The Lieutenant Governor inspected development works in the market’s middle lane and received a detailed briefing on project timelines and implementation status from NDMC officials. He stressed the need to modernise the market and improve civic facilities to strengthen its position as an international destination.
Sandhu said efforts were underway to create a better experience for visitors while upgrading public infrastructure and civic amenities.
He directed concerned departments to speed up the remaining works while ensuring compliance with quality and safety benchmarks, including fire safety measures. He also called for the adoption of global best practices in urban infrastructure development.
The Lieutenant Governor said Delhi’s transformation into a modern and sustainable urban centre requires the upgradation of iconic public spaces and commercial districts.
He added that creating a seamless experience for visitors, tourists, and local businesses remains a priority. Apart from reviewing the Khan Market redevelopment project, Sandhu also inspected the implementation of a Modular Rain Water Harvesting System at Satya Marg under NDMC’s jurisdiction.
NDMC Chairman Keshav Chandra informed the Lieutenant Governor that 290 out of 340 existing and planned rainwater harvesting structures under NDMC have already been cleaned and made operational. According to NDMC, work on the remaining 50 structures is progressing on a fast-track basis and is expected to be completed by the end of June. These include 28 modular rainwater harvesting systems and 22 conventional structures.
NDMC Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal said the civic body is committed to upgrading public infrastructure and strengthening environmental sustainability in line with the broader vision of developing a cleaner, greener, and smarter New Delhi.
