LG Sandhu seeks humane, systematic stray cattle management
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Monday called for a systematic and humane approach to managing stray cattle to keep roads and public spaces free of the hazards posed by them without compromising their welfare. Sandhu also directed the officials concerned to take strict and time-bound action against illegal and unauthorised constructions in the Capital, an official statement said.
Reviewing municipal priorities across Delhi with MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar, Sandhu directed that action against illegal and unauthorised constructions be stepped up so that such activities do not go unchecked or become a norm across the city.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) should adopt a systematic and humane approach to keep roads and public spaces free of the hazards posed by stray cattle without compromising their welfare, the LG told the meeting; the statement read.
The meeting also reviewed the status of garbage clearance, street cleanliness, waterlogging and coordination between agencies undertaking road-cutting work and those responsible for maintaining roads.
On garbage disposal, Sandhu stressed the need for regular and timely collection of waste from residential and commercial areas to prevent accumulation and directed that street cleanliness be maintained regularly rather than only during specific drives or inspections.
Reviewing the season’s performance on waterlogging in the ongoing monsoon season, the LG directed that a comprehensive assessment of this year’s measures be undertaken and lessons learnt be incorporated into future planning for the coming year. In this regard, the LG specifically pointed out that the measures undertaken for desilting of drains and the timing thereof may be reworked.
On the management of stray cattle, he called for a systematic and humane approach to keep roads and public spaces free of the hazards posed by stray animals, while ensuring their welfare is not compromised.
Taking note of frequent road cutting by different agencies and departments, the LG directed “seamless coordination between road-cutting and road-owning agencies to prevent repeated damage and inconvenience to commuters”. He said the agencies laying cables, pipelines and other utilities must coordinate with the departments maintaining the roads to ensure prompt and proper restoration.
The LG directed the Commissioner to prioritise visible on-ground delivery, enforce accountability among officials and ensure that Delhi’s roads and neighbourhoods remain clean and well-maintained, stating that the test of good governance ultimately lies in what citizens experience on the ground everyday.
