UP: Teacher shot dead inside Lakhimpur Kheri school; accused dies by suicide

A 26-year-old woman teacher was allegedly shot dead inside her school here on Monday by a 28-year-old man, who later shot himself with the same weapon and died, police said.

The deceased was identified as Nishat Fatima, a resident of Hidayat Nagar locality under the Sadar Kotwali area, while the accused was identified as Mohd Saud Ansari, a resident of Naurangabad, they said.

Police said the two knew each other for a long time.

Kheri Senior Superintendent of Police Khyati Garg, who along with District Magistrate Anjani Kumar Singh visited the school and inspected the spot, said Ansari arrived at around 11:30 am to meet Fatima.

"Saud came to the school at around 11:30 today to meet Nishat Fatima and went with her to her classroom upstairs," Garg said.

The SSP said the two reportedly had a verbal altercation, following which Ansari allegedly pulled out a country-made pistol and fired at Fatima.

"The youth, reportedly following some verbal dispute, whipped out a country-made pistol and fired at the woman, which left her dead on the spot," Garg said.

Ansari then allegedly shot himself with the same weapon and died at the spot, she said.

The bodies have been sent for postmortem examination.

"Investigations have been instituted to ascertain the reason behind the incident," Garg said.

Police and administrative officials inspected the scene and initiated an investigation to establish the circumstances and motive behind the shooting.
