KEM Medical College sends MBBS student on 15-day leave over cadaver remark controversy

Mumbai's KEM Hospital and Medical College has placed MBBS student Sejal Pawar on a 15-day compulsory leave following a controversy over remarks she allegedly made about cadavers during a comedy show. The institution has also barred her from entering the college campus and hostel during the leave period.
The action follows widespread criticism on social media after a video of the remarks went viral. College authorities have constituted a five-member inquiry committee to investigate the matter and submit its findings within seven days.
According to the preliminary investigation, the student seen in the viral video has been identified as Sejal Pawar. The college administration described the remarks as inappropriate and unacceptable, prompting disciplinary action pending the outcome of the probe.
Officials said Pawar has also been restricted from participating in academic and extracurricular activities during the inquiry period. Considering the public backlash and online reactions, the college has handed her over to her family and advised psychological counselling to support her mental well-being.
Authorities stated that the student expressed regret during the inquiry and appeared emotionally distressed. The institution has emphasized that no final conclusions will be drawn until the committee completes its investigation.
The inquiry panel includes a retired professor, a senior journalist, and three faculty members. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Cyber Police has registered a case related to the viral videos and named comedian Pranit More, Sejal Pawar, Himanshu Jangra, and others in the investigation.
The controversy began after remarks allegedly made by Pawar regarding male cadavers during a comedy show sparked outrage online. The incident also drew attention to comments made by another participant, Himanshu Jangra, whose remarks led to significant public criticism.
