Kedarnath pilgrimage suspended after landslide kills one near Cheerbasa Helipad

A man was killed after falling boulders struck him near the Cheerbasa Helipad in Kedarnath on Sunday, as the pilgrimage was temporarily suspended following rain and landslides, officials said.

The State Emergency Operation Centre said the victim was hit by boulders that rolled down a hillside near the Cheerbasa Helipad. He died at the spot.

The deceased was identified as 65-year-old Madan Mohan Tiwari, a resident of Ukhimath.

Police said debris caused by the rain had blocked the Kedarnath pilgrimage route.

Officials advised travellers heading towards Kedarnath to halt at Sonprayag and Gaurikund, while pilgrims returning from Kedarnath were asked to stop at Jangalchatti.

Authorities have urged pilgrims not to proceed further along the route until the trail is cleared and official permission is given.

Officials said pilgrim movement will resume only after weather conditions improve and the routes are cleared to ensure safety.  (with inputs from PTI)
