Xi proposes open-source AI, manufacturing push
Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday called for stronger cooperation among BRICS countries and the wider Global South, saying the principle that "might makes right" should have no place in international affairs.
Addressing the concluding session of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Xi urged member countries to strengthen ties with emerging economies and work together to protect global supply chains, expand markets and promote a more inclusive international order.
Xi said international rules should be based on fairness and developed with the participation of all countries. He stressed that nations should respect sovereign equality, avoid interference in one another's internal affairs and seek peaceful solutions to disputes.
He also called on Global South countries to reject what he described as "double standards" and emphasised that countries should have an equal standing regardless of their size, economic strength or wealth.
Xi urged greater support for multilateralism and the United Nations, along with reforms to international institutions to ensure developing countries have a stronger voice in global decision-making. He also backed changes to the international financial system to improve the representation of developing economies.
Alongside his call for greater political and economic cooperation, Xi presented a five-point plan aimed at expanding collaboration within BRICS.
The first proposal focuses on artificial intelligence. China plans to support the creation of a BRICS open-source AI community, with cooperation on large language models, specialised training programmes and the development of an open AI ecosystem.

The second initiative aims to make trade and investment easier among BRICS members. Xi proposed establishing a BRICS special economic zone partnership that would facilitate policy coordination and create new opportunities for investment and economic development.
The third proposal targets the digital economy. China has suggested creating a BRICS digital ecosystem cloud platform to promote digital-skills training, technological exchanges and closer cooperation between industries.
The fourth initiative focuses on intelligent manufacturing. Xi said China was ready to assist fellow BRICS countries in developing smart factories and establishing standards to support the modernisation and upgrading of manufacturing industries.
The fifth proposal centres on science and technology.
China has proposed a BRICS engineer development alliance to support joint training and mutual recognition of professional standards. Xi also announced plans for a youth exchange programme focused on scientific and technological innovation.
