Delhi factory fire: 6 injured after women, children jump from building in panic
Six people, including women and children, were injured after jumping from a building in panic following a fire at an adjacent godown-cum-factory in northwest Delhi’s Swaroop Nagar on Sunday, police said.
The fire broke out on the ground and first floors of a factory that manufactures judo dresses and boxing gloves. Police said no one was present inside the factory when the blaze erupted.
However, panic gripped residents of the adjoining building, prompting six people, including women and children, to jump from the structure and sustain injuries, a senior police officer said. All the injured were taken to hospitals and are reported to be out of danger.
The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) received information about the blaze at 11:05 am and deployed 15 fire tenders to the spot. Firefighters launched an immediate operation and brought the blaze under control, police said.
A video circulating on social media purportedly shows six people, including children, escaping through a small window of the building and jumping into an empty plot below. Two children are seen climbing out first, while people on the ground attempt to cushion their fall using bedsheets and mattresses.
The footage then shows a woman preparing to jump from the window as people below rush to arrange additional mattresses and bedsheets. Witnesses can be heard shouting instructions amid the panic, including, “Arey aur chaddar lao” (bring more bedsheets).
Police said further details about the circumstances that led to the fire and the extent of damage are being ascertained. Authorities are also verifying the identities and details of those injured.
