India bags 17 medals at U-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championship
India claimed 17 medals, including four gold, on the opening day of the U-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championship in Lagos, Nigeria, on Sunday, August 9, with the contingent dominating both men's and women's individual events.
The medal haul included four gold, four silver and nine bronzes, with at least one Indian fencer reaching the podium in all six individual events across the Sabre, Foil and Epee categories, according to a release from the Fencing Association of India (FAI). The championship began Sunday and will conclude on August 14.
In the men's Sabre event, Nikhil Wagh won gold, while Lakshay Badser took silver. Ashwini Arya and Laishram Moramba shared bronze, giving India a clean sweep of all four medals in the category.
India also secured medals in men's Foil, where Tejas Patil won silver and Hemash Sanasam claimed bronze, and in men's Epee, where Lokesh Vemani took silver and Shaurya Ashwini and Godwin Anbkess both won bronze.
On the women's side, India topped the podium in two of three categories. Joys Ashita won gold in women's Foil, with teammate Kanaglakshmi taking silver. In women's Epee, Prachi Lohan won gold, while Nivedhya Nair and Anupriya both secured bronze.
In women's Sabre, Jeferlin claimed gold and Aakhari took silver, while Shreya Gupta added a bronze to complete India's medal tally in the discipline.
Rajeev Mehta, Secretary General of the Fencing Association of India, congratulated the contingent on the performance. "I extend my heartiest congratulations to all our medal winners, coaches, support staff, and families for their relentless dedication and contribution to India's remarkable performance," Mehta said, as per the FAI release.
