Kanwariya swept away in Odisha's Angul, 8 hurt in separate mishap
A kanwariya was swept away while collecting water from a stream in Odisha's Angul district, and eight others were injured after a mini-truck carrying them overturned in a separate incident in Ganjam district, police said on Monday, August 10.
A group of kanwariyas had gone to a stream near Dipirisingha in Angul district on Sunday, August 9, night to collect water to offer to Lord Shiva during the holy month of Shravan, when two of them were swept away by a strong current, fire service officials said.
One of the two, identified as Smruti Ranjan, was rescued by fire service personnel, while an operation was underway to trace the other person, officials said. Ranjan claimed the incident occurred due to the sudden release of water from the Derjang Dam.
In the separate incident, eight kanwariyas were injured, three of them seriously, after the mini-truck in which they were travelling overturned near Kaliabali under Chamakhandi police station limits in Ganjam district on Sunday.
Around 20 kanwariyas from Jagdalpur were travelling in the mini-truck to collect water from the Rushikulya river to offer at the Aleswara Shiva temple near Humma, on the occasion of the second Monday of the Hindu lunar month of Shravan, police said.
The injured, including the driver of the vehicle, were admitted to the sub-divisional hospital in Chhatrapur for treatment. Three of those with grievous injuries were later shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.
The condition of the injured was stated to be out of danger, Sradhanjali Subudhi, inspector-in-charge of Chamakhandi police station, said.
