How placements are changing in Indian universities: Beyond CGPAs and mass hiring

For a very long time, placement season was one of the biggest events on any Indian campus during the end semesters. Since the last decade, the whole gamut of placement has been consistently changing as new-age recruiters have started to look past a student’s CGPA. Even a few years ago, a good CGPA would qualify a student as a strong candidate. However, as the jobs evolve, companies are looking for students who have solved problems, built something of their own, and made decisions that could ideally impact a business for good. Inevitably, placement season is no longer a year-end activity. Placement outcomes in Indian universities are now a culmination of innovation, entrepreneurship, decision-making, skill-building alongside academic excellence. Another biggest shift in the Indian placement scenario is the gradual but visible decline in mass hiring. Concentration of a large chunk of offers from a few specific big companies used to be the norm and somehow was a yardstick of success. However, modern recruiters are looking for candidates who already understand the specific domain (management, technology, design, etc.) and adapt to workplace change without hampering the business process. With AI & other emerging technologies becoming an integral part of workplace change, Indian universities are inevitably shifting towards an interdisciplinary module and application-based learning. As the placement trend is moving away from mass hiring to a skill-first one, Indian universities are prioritising specialisation from day one, unlike the traditional practice of keeping it for the end. Deloitte’s State of AI in the Enterprise 2026 report found insufficient worker skills, not budget or technology, is the biggest barrier to AI adoption. Roles like prompt engineering, AI governance and human-AI collaboration did not exist five years ago and are now standard hiring lines.
To keep pace with evolving market demands, universities are increasingly adopting tech-driven specialisations and encouraging global mobility among students. Training now takes place on advanced, real-world infrastructure. This shift has also helped reduce employer onboarding time, as students entering the workforce are already familiar with real industry environments. In fact, this kind of hands-on, industry-aligned learning has become the new standard across Indian universities.

But the old model, a single event at the end of four years, is fading. The new model is continuous, skill-driven and personal. Universities that adapt will produce graduates who are genuinely prepared for the world of work.
