High-tech cameras deployed near Indira Gandhi International Airport to catch speeding and traffic violations

Driving near the Indira Gandhi International Airport just got stricter, with authorities rolling out a high-tech automated system to monitor and penalise traffic violations.
In a joint initiative by Delhi International Airport Limited and Delhi Traffic Police, an advanced e-challan enforcement system has been introduced across key airport roads to improve traffic discipline and safety.
The system currently includes 14 high-definition Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, with plans to expand coverage by adding 35 more cameras in the coming weeks.
These smart cameras can automatically detect a range of violations, including overspeeding, illegal parking, wrong-side driving, triple riding, riding without helmets, jumping red lights, and stop-line violations. Once a violation is recorded, the data is processed through NIC systems and verified by traffic personnel before e-challans are issued.
The cameras have been strategically installed at high-traffic zones such as Aerocity, Central Spine Road, Rangpuri, Centaur Hotel junction, NSG junction, Cargo Terminal area, and Terminal 1 exit road—areas that experience heavy vehicular movement daily.
Officials said the move aims to streamline traffic flow, especially during peak travel hours, and ensure stricter compliance with road safety rules.
According to DCP Traffic Shobhit Saxena, the initiative marks a major step toward technology-driven enforcement in the capital. He emphasised that ANPR-based monitoring will enhance transparency, reduce manual intervention, and ensure uniform enforcement of traffic laws.
Authorities expect the system to significantly improve road discipline and reduce violations around one of the busiest airport zones in the country.a
