Heavy rain lashes Delhi; IMD issues Red, Orange Alerts
Heavy showers swept across several parts of the national capital on Monday, August 24, bringing relief from the previous day's sweltering humidity even as they left several areas waterlogged.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts, forecasting heavy to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and winds gusting up to 40 kilometres per hour over the next few hours.
Chhatarpur recorded the highest rainfall in the city between 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., at 28 mm, followed by Lodi Road at 24.6 mm and Pitampura at 18.5 mm, according to IMD data. The Ridge recorded 5 mm of rainfall during the period, while Mayur Vihar received 1.5 mm, Safdarjung 1 mm and Aya Nagar 0.1 mm.
The rain was accompanied by strong winds in several areas, and waterlogging was reported around New Ashok Nagar Metro Station, Burari, C R Park and Alaknanda, according to the report.
Commuters took to social media to report traffic snarls and waterlogged stretches across the city.
Delhi's prime weather station at Safdarjung recorded a minimum temperature of 27.8 degrees Celsius on Monday, August 24, 1.4 degrees above normal, while the Ridge logged the city's lowest minimum temperature at 24 degrees Celsius, IMD said.
The maximum temperature is expected to settle at 34 degrees Celsius, according to the weather office.
