FIFA appoints Slovenian Referee Slavko Vinčić for World Cup Final between Spain and Argentina

FIFA has appointed experienced Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić to officiate the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, making him the first Slovenian to take charge of football's biggest international match. The final is scheduled to be played on Sunday, with Vinčić leading an all-Slovenian officiating team that includes assistant referees Tomaž Klančnik and Andraž Kovačič.
The appointment has drawn attention because Vinčić has previously officiated matches involving both finalists. He has overseen several games featuring Spain in recent years, while Argentina's record under him has been mixed, including notable World Cup and international fixtures.
Despite discussions over his past encounters with the two teams, FIFA's decision reflects confidence in his experience at the highest level of the game. Vinčić has previously refereed major UEFA competitions, including the UEFA Champions League final, and is regarded as one of Europe's top match officials.
The World Cup final between defending champions Argentina and European champions Spain is expected to be one of the biggest sporting events of the year, with Vinčić entrusted to oversee the high-profile contest.
