Farmers protest power cuts near Revanth Reddy's native village in Telangana
Farmers staged a road blockade near Kondareddypalli, the native village of Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, on Thursday to protest alleged power cuts affecting agricultural activity in the area.
The farmers blocked the Srisailam-Hyderabad National Highway, alleging that their fields were receiving electricity for only six to eight hours a day and that crops were drying up due to inadequate power supply.
The protest led to a major traffic jam on the highway, according to reports.
The agitating farmers warned that they would continue their protest until round-the-clock power supply was restored for agricultural purposes.
Farmers also expressed concern over the impact of the power cuts on their crops and recalled the uninterrupted power supply they claimed was available during the previous BRS government.
Some protesters said they regretted voting for the Congress and claimed that their problems would be addressed only if BRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao returned to power.
The protest comes amid complaints from farmers in parts of Telangana about power availability for agricultural operations, with the protesters demanding uninterrupted supply to prevent further damage to standing crops.
The farmers' agitation near the Chief Minister's native village has also triggered a political debate over the Congress government's power supply arrangements and its claims regarding support to the agriculture sector.
