Ex-IB officer takes charge of Delhi Police

In a notable administrative reshuffle, the Union Government has appointed Anurag Kumar, a 1994-batch IPS officer and former Special Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), as the new Commissioner of Delhi Police. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved Kumar’s repatriation from the IB.
An official order issued on Friday stated, “With the approval of the Competent Authority, Anurag Kumar, IPS (AGMUT:1994), is hereby appointed as Commissioner of Police, Delhi, with effect from the date of assumption of charge and until further orders.” The incumbent, Satish Golchha, a 1992-batch IPS officer, has been directed to report to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi for further posting upon Kumar’s assumption of office. The transition is anticipated to proceed smoothly. Kumar’s predecessor, Golcha, who assumed command in 2023, focused on technological enhancements, women’s safety initiatives, and community policing. Kumar is expected to build on these initiatives while placing greater emphasis on intelligence integration and rapid-response capabilities.
This appointment places a highly experienced intelligence professional at the helm of Delhi Police during a period when the security environment in the Capital remains complex and multifaceted.
Kumar has been extensively involved in national intelligence operations, threat assessment, and inter-agency coordination. His background is expected to enhance intelligence-led policing in Delhi.
Colleagues and analysts describe Kumar as a low-profile, results-oriented officer known for meticulous work. His tenure at the IB has provided him with a nuanced understanding of internal security dynamics and the delicate balance between law enforcement and civil liberties, traits that are especially valuable in Delhi, which frequently hosts protests, diplomatic events, and high-stakes political activities.
