Delhi records cleanest air in nearly 3 years as AQI drops to 48

Delhi recorded its cleanest air in nearly 3 years as the city's Air Quality Index (AQI) dropped to 48, placing it in the 'Good' category for the first time since September 2023. The sharp improvement followed widespread monsoon showers that helped wash away pollutants from the atmosphere.
According to air quality data, an AQI of 48 falls within the 0-50 'Good' category under the Central Pollution Control Board's classification, indicating minimal health risk and clean air for residents.
The dramatic improvement came after heavy rainfall lashed the national capital, reducing particulate matter levels and significantly improving visibility. While the rains caused waterlogging, traffic congestion and disruption in several parts of Delhi, they also brought a rare respite from chronic air pollution.
The last time Delhi's daily AQI entered the 'Good' category was in September 2023, making the latest reading the best in almost three years. Experts attribute the improvement primarily to continuous rainfall and favourable meteorological conditions that dispersed airborne pollutants.
Despite the welcome development, environmental experts caution that the improvement is likely to be temporary, with air quality expected to fluctuate depending on weather conditions and seasonal pollution sources.
