UP: Man arrested for allegedly killing daughter-in-law over dowry

A man has been arrested for allegedly killing his daughter-in-law over dowry, an official said on Friday.

The accused, identified as Kamlesh Yadav, 53, was arrested on Thursday from near a temple, police said.

Deputy Superintendent of Police, Rasra circle, Rajneesh said the victim, identified as Goldy, was found hanging at her house on the intervening night of August 12 and 13.

According to the officer, Goldy's in-laws allegedly strangled her and later hanged her body to make the death appear to be a suicide.

Goldy's husband, Rakesh Kumar Yadav, 30, and mother-in-law, Israwati Devi, 56, had already been arrested in connection with the case. An FIR was registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Dowry Prohibition Act.

According to the FIR, Goldy married Rakesh on April 29, 2021. Her in-laws allegedly subjected her to physical and mental harassment over dowry after the marriage.

Goldy's family had given Rs 3 lakh to help purchase a vehicle, but the alleged harassment continued, the FIR stated.

The deceased had also informed her family that she feared for her life.  (with inputs from PTI)
