Conspirator held for Kapil Sharma cafe attack
Bandhu Maan Singh Sekhon, a 28-year-old Ludhiana resident accused of planning and coordinating all three firing attacks on Kapil Sharma’s Kap’s Café in Canada, has been arrested by Delhi Police. The Crime Branch apprehended him on the night of November 24-25 after intelligence indicated he had slipped back into Punjab to evade a Canadian police crackdown.
The arrest gives Indian investigators their first direct link to the Canada-based Goldy Dhillon gang, which had publicly claimed responsibility for the shootings. DCP (Crime Branch) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav said Sekhon was a key planner behind the shooting at Kap’s Café in Surrey. His arrest is a breakthrough against organised crime with international links.
The case has drawn attention in both countries because the target is a well-known Indian celebrity and the attacks happened in a busy Surrey neighbourhood. According to the Crime Branch, Sekhon handled planning, logistics, and arms for the attacks. He coordinated with shooters, arranged safe houses, and stayed in touch with gang members even after fleeing Canada in August.
Conspirator held for Kapil Sharma cafe attack Bandhu Maan Sekhon was apprehended in Ludhiana, Punjab, after investigators tracked his movements following the arrest of two Khatri gang associates in Rohini earlier this month. The associates, caught with eight foreign-made pistols, disclosed that one weapon had been delivered to Sekhon. Acting on this information, a police team led by Inspectors Sunder Gautam and Man Singh, with other fellow police officials, conducted covert surveillance and identified Sekhon at the target location. He was ultimately caught with a Chinese-made PX-3 pistol and eight live cartridges.
Kap’s Café, which opened in July 2025, was hit by gunfire on July 10, August 7, and October 16. No one was injured, but the attacks caused panic among staff and visitors and led to heavy security deployment by Canadian authorities. The first attack was claimed by Harjit Laddi, linked to the banned Babbar Khalsa International. He accused Kapil Sharma of insulting Nihang Sikhs on his show. However, hours later, Goldy Dhillon also claimed responsibility for the same attack.
The second and third attacks were claimed by Dhillon and gangster Kulveer Sidhu. Their posts on social media hinted at extortion demands and suggested a possible fallout with networks that earlier targeted actor Salman Khan. Canadian police arrested some members of the group, including key operative Seepu, but Sekhon managed to fly out to India.
Sekhon had moved to Canada in 2023 on a work visa. He worked in a pharmaceutical company in Brampton. Police say he met Dhillon gang members through Punjab-based contacts abroad. He later became a handler who arranged arms, transport, and money. Before joining Dhillon’s group, he had links with the Harry Chatha gang. Chatha is wanted in cases of extortion against Indian businessmen in Canada and the United States and is believed to be in Pakistan.
Canadian records show Sekhon was earlier booked for conspiracy, possession of prohibited firearms, handling of altered weapons, and possession of stolen property. His name surfaced as a prime planner after the arrest of Seepu, who told investigators that the shooters Daljot Rehal and Gurjot acted on Sekhon’s directions. Back in India, Sekhon was also wanted in a 2019 attempt to murder case in Ludhiana.
Investigators say his arrest highlights a trend. Young men from Punjab with minor criminal records travel abroad, link up with gangs, and then return to India when pressure builds. Many continue working for these networks from here.
