26-year-old woman dies by suicide over alleged dowry harassment; husband and in-laws arrested

A 26-year-old woman from Maharashtra's Ambernath allegedly died by suicide after enduring prolonged physical and mental harassment from her husband and in-laws over dowry demands. The incident has sparked outrage, with police arresting three members of her marital family on charges of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide.
The deceased, identified as Vishakha Tilkar, was a commerce graduate from Pune who had married Dr. Nitin Tilkar, a BHMS practitioner based in Ulhasnagar, on April 30 through an arranged marriage. According to her family, no dowry was exchanged during the wedding. However, soon after the marriage, her husband and relatives allegedly began demanding 50 grams of gold from her parents.
Family members alleged that Vishakha was subjected to constant humiliation and emotional abuse when the demand was not met. Her father, who works as a rickshaw driver in Pune, was reportedly unable to fulfill the demand.
Apart from the alleged dowry pressure, Vishakha's husband and in-laws were said to be suspicious of her character. According to the police, she was subjected to extreme monitoring and restrictions. CCTV cameras were allegedly installed inside the house to track her movements, and she was discouraged from interacting with neighbours or outsiders.
The situation reportedly escalated when Vishakha was seen speaking to a neighbouring woman on Sunday. Her family alleged that she was physically assaulted by her husband and in-laws following the incident. Distressed by the treatment, she contacted her parents and informed them about the harassment she had been facing.
Her parents were preparing to travel from Pune to Ambernath to discuss the matter with her in-laws. However, before they could reach her, Vishakha allegedly took the extreme step of ending her life.
Senior Police Inspector Ramesh Patil of Shivaji Nagar Police Station said that the accused routinely harassed the woman because they were dissatisfied with the gifts received during the marriage and later demanded gold as dowry. Following a complaint from the victim's family, police arrested Dr. Nitin Tilkar, his mother Chhaya Tilkar, and his brother.
The three accused have been booked under relevant provisions related to dowry harassment and abetment to suicide and were produced before a court. Further investigation into the case is underway.
The incident has once again highlighted the continuing issue of dowry-related abuse and domestic violence despite strict legal provisions aimed at protecting women.
