CID reaches Abhishek Banerjee’s residence in MLA signature forgery probe

A team of the West Bengal CID on Saturday visited the Kolkata residence of TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee in connection with the ongoing investigation into the alleged MLA signature forgery case. However, CID officials were unable to question him as staff at his residence informed them that he was not at home and they were unaware of his whereabouts.
The case revolves around allegations that signatures of several Trinamool Congress MLAs were forged on a letter submitted to the Assembly Secretariat in support of Shobhandeb Chattopadhyay for a position carrying Cabinet rank. The controversy gained traction after discrepancies were reportedly found in the signature of Nayna Banerjee.
As part of the probe, the CID has already questioned several TMC leaders and legislators, including Kunal Ghosh, Chandranath Sinha and Baharul Islam. Investigators recently visited Nayna Banerjee’s residence, examined documents and collected signature-related material for verification.
The Assembly Secretariat had earlier lodged a complaint claiming that the signature on the support letter did not match the specimen signature submitted by Nayna Banerjee after taking oath as an MLA. The CID is now examining whether any forgery was committed and who may have been involved in preparing the disputed document.
