Delhi govt plans onion sale at Rs 35/kg to check price rise

The Centre will supply 1,000 metric tons of onions to Delhi, which will be sold to consumers at Rs 35 per kg, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Tuesday, September 1.

The onions will be made available through fair price shops and mobile vans across all 13 districts of the national capital, according to a statement issued by the Delhi Chief Minister's Office.

The government has decided to deploy vans to ensure that affordable onions reach areas where residents may have limited access to fair price shops, the statement said.

Onion prices have risen sharply in Delhi in recent weeks following crop damage caused by rains. At present, onions are being sold in retail markets in the capital at around Rs 50-60 per kg.

In view of the price rise, the Delhi government has decided to procure onions and make them available to consumers at affordable rates.

Gupta said her government would not allow any shortage of onions in the capital and would ensure adequate availability of essential food items for residents.

The government is also closely monitoring onion availability and prices to prevent any shortage in Delhi, she said.

"We will not allow any onion shortage in the capital," the chief minister said, reiterating the government's commitment to ensuring that onions remain available to people at reasonable and affordable prices.
