Centre removes BAT-BMS apps after reports of remote e-rickshaw shutdowns

The Central government has directed the removal of two mobile applications linked to the BAT-BMS battery management system from major app stores after reports claimed they could be used to remotely shut down e-rickshaws. The decision follows concerns over public safety after videos circulating on social media showed users allegedly switching off nearby e-rickshaws through Bluetooth connectivity.
According to officials, the apps were removed as a precautionary measure while authorities investigate their capabilities and potential misuse.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has also urged app store operators to strengthen checks before allowing applications with security risks to be listed. Experts have warned that if such apps are misused, they could endanger drivers, passengers, and other road users.
The government is now examining the cybersecurity and safety implications of Bluetooth-enabled battery management systems used in electric vehicles. Officials said additional measures may be introduced to prevent unauthorised access to these systems and ensure that connected mobility technologies remain secure and safe for public use.
