Breaking barriers: Women step into India’s woodworking industry

The Hettich Poddar WoodWorking Institute (HPWWI) marked a historic milestone by hosting the Convocation and Award Ceremony for its first-ever all-women batch in woodworking—also India’s first such cohort in this traditionally male-dominated sector. The ceremony honoured 108 graduates, including 50 women trainees, who completed HPWWI’s three-month Short-Term Training (STT–Mobilized) programme.
Recognising their courage and pioneering spirit, all women graduates were presented with the “Ice Breaker Award.” The event underscored HPWWI’s commitment to inclusive, industry-aligned skill development. Amit Prasad, Director, HPWWI and CHRO, Hettich India, highlighted the importance of creating opportunity through capability rather than convention. Graduates received NSDC- and FFSC-recognised certifications, along with awards such as the Medal of Merit.
The programme combined advanced technical training, hands-on exposure to modern machinery, and strong industry linkages, resulting in on-the-spot job offers for several students. With participants from multiple States, including those from underprivileged backgrounds, the convocation showcased how structured skilling can open sustainable career pathways while expanding women’s participation in the woodworking sector.
