Ashwa Sparsh — healing through horses

Assam R&V Sqn NCC, under the aegis of NCC Group Headquarters, Guwahati, NER Directorate, successfully conducted Ashwa Sparsh, a unique initiative aimed at empowering specially-abled children through interaction with horses at the Veterinary Field, Khanapara.
The programme brought together specially-abled children from Asha School, Narangi Military Station, providing them an opportunity to experience the therapeutic and emotional benefits of equine interaction in a safe and encouraging environment.
Meaning “the healing touch of horses,” Ashwa Sparsh is designed to promote confidence, emotional well-being, sensory development and social inclusion among children with special needs.
The event commenced with a welcome address by the Officer Commanding, 47 Assam R&V Sqn NCC, followed by an engaging entertainment session featuring horse show jumping, a jalebi race on horseback, and a bucket-and-ball race performed by NCC cadets from the College of Veterinary Science, Khanapara.

Subsequently, the children participated in assisted horse riding, grooming activities and feeding of horses under the guidance and supervision of experienced PI staff and NCC cadets. The R&V NCC cadets actively volunteered as side walkers and facilitators, exemplifying the core values of service, empathy and community engagement, while also developing leadership qualities and a deeper sense of social responsibility.
The event was graced by Brigadier NC Khumman, Group Commander, NCC Group Headquarters, Guwahati, who highlighted that the programme embodies the true spirit of NCC by combining discipline with compassion and contributing to nation-building through community outreach.
Parents and caregivers expressed their appreciation for the initiative, noting visible joy and increased confidence among the participating children.
47 Assam R&V Sqn NCC plans to conduct Ashwa Sparsh as a regular outreach activity to strengthen bonds between the armed forces community and society, while promoting inclusive opportunities for all.
The event concluded with the distribution of gift hampers to the children and an interactive session between cadets, instructors and participating families.
