Asansol Durga Temple Reopens After Years Following BJP Victory in West Bengal Elections 2026

A Durga temple in Asansol has reopened for devotees after remaining shut for several years due to local tensions, in a development that coincides with the Bharatiya Janata Party’s sweeping victory in the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026.
The temple, managed by the Shri Shri Durgamata Charitable Trust, had largely remained closed to the public except during major festivals like Durga Puja and Lakshmi Puja. Its reopening follows the BJP’s strong performance in Paschim Bardhaman district, where the party secured all nine Assembly seats.
Soon after the gates were opened, a large number of devotees and BJP workers gathered at the temple premises to offer prayers and celebrate the occasion.
The reopening was facilitated by newly elected BJP MLA Krishnendu Mukherjee, who had earlier promised to ensure year-round access to the temple if elected.
The temple’s closure had been linked to local tensions and administrative restrictions, making its reopening a significant moment for residents. For many, the development carries both religious and symbolic importance, reflecting a shift in the region’s political landscape.
