AI-Powered law firm wins court case against human lawyers in UK first

In a landmark development for the legal industry, a UK-based artificial intelligence-powered law firm has successfully won a court case against a team represented by traditional human lawyers, marking what is being described as a world first.
Garfield AI, an AI-driven legal platform authorised by the UK's Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), helped a freelance human resources professional secure a favourable judgment in a £7,000 dispute over unpaid fees. The AI handled the preparation of legal documents, witness statements and case bundles before instructing a human barrister to represent the client in court.
The case was heard at Wandsworth County Court, where both sides were represented by barristers. After a three-hour trial involving multiple witnesses and cross-examinations, the court ruled in favour of Garfield AI's client and dismissed the opposing party's counterclaim.
Garfield AI's co-founder Philip Young described the outcome as a significant milestone for legal technology and access to justice. He said the case demonstrated how AI tools could help individuals pursue legal claims at a fraction of the traditional cost.
The AI platform reportedly charged around £400 for its services, substantially lower than conventional legal fees. Garfield AI currently handles small claims disputes worth up to £10,000 and aims to make legal assistance more affordable and accessible.
Legal experts say the case could signal a growing role for artificial intelligence in the legal profession, particularly in document preparation, case management and providing low-cost legal support to individuals and small businesses.
