Punjab Police's War Against Drugs Enters Day 33 With Major Crackdown

Thursday, 03 April 2025 | PNS | Chandigarh

In a significant escalation of Punjab's war against drugs, state police on Wednesday conducted massive overnight raids across all 28 districts, arresting 59 drug peddlers and recovering 1.6 kg of heroin along with Rs 5.53 lakh in drug money. This marked the 33rd consecutive day of the State Government's aggressive ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ (War Against Drugs) campaign.

The operation saw over 200 specialized police teams, comprising 1,400 personnel and led by 91 senior officers, conduct simultaneous raids at 497 identified locations. Authorities registered 36 new FIRs and questioned 546 suspicious individuals as part of the crackdown. With these latest arrests, the total number of drug smugglers apprehended under the campaign has reached 4,765 — a remarkable feat in just over a month.

Special DGP Arpit Shukla highlighted the effectiveness of Punjab's EDP strategy - Enforcement, Deaddiction and Prevention. While enforcement actions continue to yield daily arrests, the rehabilitation aspect saw four addicts voluntarily enter deaddiction programs today. The prevention wing has successfully mobilized community participation through village panchayats and youth groups.

The AAP government has formed a high-powered five-member cabinet sub-committee, headed by Finance Minister Harpal Cheema, to monitor the anti-drug campaign. CM Bhagwant Mann has issued strict instructions to all Commissioners of Police, Deputy Commissioners and Senior Superintendents of Police to maintain relentless pressure on drug networks.

Authorities note increasing public support, with a 22 percent rise in tip-offs through the dedicated WhatsApp helpline (9779100200). This community involvement, combined with police action, has led to several high-profile seizures including the demolition of properties belonging to known drug lords.

Campaign by the Numbers

- Total arrests: 4,765

- Heroin seized: Over 200 kg

- Drug money recovered: More than Rs 10 crore

- Properties demolished: More than 12 assets of drug kingpins
