Tata Steel marked a historic achievement as its H-Blast Furnace in Jamshedpur became the first in India to surpass 50 million tonnes of hot metal production without undergoing mid-term repairs. This landmark accomplishment not only underscores Tata Steel’s operational excellence but also sets a new benchmark in the Indian steel industry.
Commissioned in 2008, the H Blast Furnace, with a working volume of 3230m³, has consistently outperformed expectations. Its annual production has exceeded 3 million tonnes, maintaining approximately 20% higher output than its designed capacity. This milestone highlights the furnace’s robust design, innovative process controls, and the dedication of cross-functional teams at Tata Steel.
"Achieving 50 million tonnes of hot metal production without mid-term repairs is a monumental milestone for Tata Steel and a testament to the exceptional engineering and operational expertise of our teams," said Chaitanya Bhanu, Vice President - Operations, Tata Steel Jamshedpur. "This achievement not only showcases our focus on sustainable and innovative steelmaking practices but also solidifies our position as a global leader in the steel industry."
The H Blast Furnace has earned recognition for its exceptional performance at both national and international levels. Notably, it holds the record for achieving the highest coal injection rate in India for nine consecutive years. The furnace has also been honoured for its energy-saving innovations, receiving accolades from the President of India.
Further distinguishing itself, the H Blast Furnace has set industry benchmarks in hot metal quality, particularly in maintaining stringent control over silicon content. Its contributions to process safety have been acknowledged by the World Steel Association for two consecutive years, reflecting Tata Steel’s commitment to excellence and safety in operations.
