Global experts unite to tackle corrosion challenges

The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM), Jamshedpur Chapter, in association with Tata Steel Ltd., CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML), and the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jamshedpur, successfully organized the International Conference on Corrosion and Coatings (i3C - 2025) on February 6-7, 2025 at Hotel Vivanta, Jamshedpur.

The conference was inaugurated by Dr. Sandip Ghosh Chowdhury, Director, CSIR-NML, along with  A K Manohar, Executive Director, NTPC Ltd., Dr. Ashok Kumar, Chairman, IIM Jamshedpur Chapter, Dr. Raghuvir Singh, Chairman, i3C-2025, and Dr. Tapan Rout, Convenor, i3C-2025. Other eminent dignitaries present included  Sudhanshu Pathak (Ex-VP, Steel Manufacturing, Tata Steel), Dr. Ramanuj Narayan (Director, CSIR-IMMT),  Praveen Thampi (Chief CRM TSK, Cold Rolling Mill),  Atul Srivastav (VP, Welspun Group), Dr. A N Bhagat, and Dr. S. Tarafdar. The conference was officially inaugurated with the release of the Souvenir.

Dr. Raghuvir Singh, Chairman of i3C-2025, welcomed the attendees and outlined the two-day technical program. The event featured four plenary lectures, 15 keynote lectures, 40 contributory lectures, and more than 15 technical poster presentations and industry stalls showcasing advancements in corrosion prevention and coatings technology.

Dr. Ashok Kumar, Chairman of IIM Jamshedpur Chapter, provided an overview of IIM's activities and its contribution to metallurgy and material science. He emphasized the significance of organizing such conferences to address contemporary industrial challenges.

Chief Guest, Dr. Sandip Ghosh Chowdhury, highlighted the severe economic impact of corrosion, stating that it leads to a loss of 2-3% of India's GDP annually. He stressed the need for collaborative efforts among scientists, engineers, and technologists to combat corrosion and protect steel structures, which are crucial to national development.

Guest of Honour,  A K Manohar, emphasized how corrosion threatens power plant structures and the need for advanced protective coating solutions. He called for strong collaboration between industries, scientists, and academicians to develop sustainable corrosion prevention strategies.

Dr. Tapan Kumar Rout, Convenor of i3C-2025 and Principal Scientist at Tata Steel R&D, expressed gratitude to all dignitaries, sponsors, speakers, and participants. He remarked that this conference stands out for fostering innovative discussions on emerging corrosion and coating technologies.

The event saw participation from over 100 delegates and speakers representing 34 reputed institutes from India and abroad, including IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur, IISc Bangalore, IICT Hyderabad, Jindal Steel & Power, RMIT University (Australia), IZA-Netherlands, and COMSOL-Switzerland.

The conference focused on advancements in coatings and high-temperature corrosion in sectors like oil & gas, chemical, nuclear & thermal power plants, construction, and mobility industries. Discussions also covered corrosion monitoring, auditing, failure analysis, and predictive modeling.
