The LalitArpan Festival celebrated its 23rd edition, a poignant dance drama that illuminated the emotional journeys of legendary women from the Mahabharata, says SAKSHI PRIYA
The LalitArpan Festival, now in its 23rd edition, captivated audiences at the Stein Auditorium, New Delhi with an enchanting display of classical Indian dance. The festival, founded by the illustrious Padmashri Guru Shovana Narayan, along with Dr. Jyotsna Suri and the late Ustad Shafaat Ahmed Khan, continues to serve as a prestigious platform for both established and emerging talents in the performing arts.
This year's highlight was the evocative dance drama “Stree Spandan: Why I Did What I Did,” which explored the profound emotional journeys of three iconic female characters from the Mahabharata: Kunti, Draupadi and Gandhari. The performances by Shovana Narayan, Gopika Varma and Sharon Lowen mesmerised the audience, each dancer showcasing her unique style while remaining deeply connected to the narrative.
Shovana Narayan, embodying Kunti through Kathak, delivered a performance filled with grace and strength. Her intricate footwork and expressive gestures resonated with the audience, allowing them to feel the weight of Kunti's struggles and her resilience. The fluidity of her movements made it seem as though she was telling a story that goes beyond time, drawing the viewers into her emotional world.
In contrast, Gopika Varma's portrayal of Draupadi through Mohiniyattam exuded both elegance and power. Varma’s ability to blend delicate movements with fierce expression highlighted Draupadi’s dignity in the face of adversity. The gentle sway of her body and the eloquent use of her hands articulated a narrative of defiance and strength, capturing the essence of Draupadi's character.
Sharon Lowen, performing as Gandhari through Odissi, brought a poignant depth to the production. Her portrayal was a heartfelt exploration of a mother’s grief, with every movement reflecting the weight of her sorrow. Lowen’s ability to convey such raw emotion through the graceful arches and bends of her body transformed the stage into a space of profound vulnerability, leaving the audience deeply moved.
Together, they created a powerful synergy, seamlessly transitioning between different styles while highlighting the themes of resilience and emotional complexity. The audience was visibly engaged, reacting with gasps and applause as the performers conveyed their narratives with authenticity and artistry.
As the final curtain fell, it was clear that “Stree Spandan” had left a lasting impact. The LalitArpan Festival not only showcased the beauty of classical dance but also reinforced the importance of these timeless narratives in connecting audiences to their cultural roots.
