An under-trial prisoner (UTP) allegedly committed suicide on Monday evening in the Baripada Circle Jail in Mayurbhanj district. The deceased was identified as Rabi Singh, a native of Mahulia village under the Sadar police station in Baripada.
According to sources, Rabi w arrested by the Excise personnel on December 20 in an illegal bootlegging case and was subsequently lodged in jail.
Since his imprisonment, UTP Rabi had been remaining silent most of the time. However, it has not been ascertained why he took the extreme step, the source added.
Rabi went to a secluded place at the backside of the jail and allegedly hanged himself with the help of a towel leading to his death.
Getting information, a team of the Bhanjapur police registered an UD case in this connection and initiated a probe. Police have seized the body and sent it for postmortem.
