The Uttar Pradesh government is leveraging cutting-edge technology to ensure precise monitoring of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) schemes, aimed at boosting rural development and employment generation, officials said here on Monday.
As part of this initiative, the Area Officer App has been launched to enhance the quality and transparency of ongoing MGNREGA projects.
“Under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s leadership, Uttar Pradesh has not only emerged as a frontrunner in rural development and job creation but has also set an example for other states in effective monitoring through technology-driven solutions like the Area Officer App. The monitoring of MGNREGA schemes has been significantly bolstered by the introduction of the app. During inspections, officers can instantly upload photographs and other critical details from work sites, ensuring that projects are completed on time and meet established quality standards.
This app, implemented on the directives of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has become instrumental in enhancing transparency and maintaining the quality of rural development works,” officials said.
MGNREGA serves as a vital source of employment for lakhs of labourers in the state, facilitating various developmental activities, including pond and road construction, tree plantation, and more.
The Area Officer App has proven to be a game-changing tool for real-time monitoring and management of these initiatives, officials said.
According to data from the Rural Development Department, Uttar Pradesh leads the nation in MGNREGA inspections, they added.
In the financial year 2023-24, the state exceeded its target by conducting over 1.50 lakh inspections, they pointed out.
In the current financial year (2024-25), more than 1.25 lakh inspections have already been carried out, surpassing the target of 99,480, officials said.
This achievement highlights the government’s commitment to rigorous monitoring and adherence to high standards in developmental works, they added.
Uttar Pradesh’s performance in MGNREGA inspections outpaces states like Andhra Pradesh, which ranks second, and Bihar, in third place. Strict measures have been implemented to ensure that all MGNREGA projects are completed on schedule and meet the highest quality benchmarks, officials said.
District magistrates, chief development officers, and block development officers regularly visit project sites to monitor progress. During these visits, they upload real-time photographs and details via the app, enabling the government to stay updated on the actual status of ongoing schemes, officials said.
