There is a big halt to the translocation of deer from Bhagwan Birsa Biological Park (BBBP) Ormanjhi Ranchi to Palamu tiger reserve.
A total of 269 deer was to be translocated from the BBBP to PTR. The Palamu tiger reserve could bring in only 147 deer. The translocation of the remaining 122 hangs in limbo.
Deputy director south division of the PTR Kumar Ashish said, "We could bring only 147 deer from the BBBP. Now for remaining 122 deer we are to wait for the permission from the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) of India again."
"The CZA had given us permission to translocate 269 deer from the BBBP from 12.6.24 to 11.12.24. It was a 6 month time for us to bring all the 269 deer." added Ashish.
The CZA is very strict with the time frame for the translocation. Expiry of the time frame calls for fresh set of permission. The PTR failed to complete the translocation of deer in 6 months.
The translocation of deer started as late as third week of November. It was on November 18 and 19 that a lot of 29 deer was brought to the PTR from BBBP.
On being asked as to why so much of delay was done in the translocation of deer to which Ashish said "There was an office order dated 19.7.24 of the chief wild life warden to translocate the deer but vagaries of Nature came in."
Heavy rains lashed at Latehar and Palamu tiger reserve too. Bringing in deer from captivity to the wilderness of the jungles in the rainy days has never been a desirable thing reminded Ashish.
Deer are very sensitive to vagaries of climate. Hence conducive time and climate were waited for the translocation of deer. It finally took off on November 18 said the deputy director south division Ashish.
"We made 8 trips in all from November 18 to December 4. We used our multi lakh air conditioned BOMA truck to translocate a total of 147 deer from Ormanjhi to the PTR." informed Ashish.
Among the translocated 147 deer, female deer count 115 while it is 32 male deer only.
All the translocated deer have been secured in the soft release centres at Teno and Parsa Pani Grasslands.
The south division of the PTR keeps the lion's share of the 147 deer. The south division gets only 3 deer and that too all male ones.
The BBBP released these deer for the PTR as they were in excess number and were officially branded as under the category of the 'extra animals in the BBBP."
The deer have been imported here in the PTR to replenish the prey base for the carnivores in the south division.
