Traffic congestion due to waterlogging after rain lashes city

Amid rain lashing parts of the national Capital in the early hours of Wednesday, Delhiites grappled with waterlogging, traffic congestion and trees uprooting while experiencing muggy and sultry weather with humidity level being recorded at 100 per cent at 8:30 am.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) received 18 calls regarding waterlogging in different areas including Ashok Park Extension, Pitampura, Patel Nagar, Kirti Nagar, Rohini, Okhla Industrial Estate, Paschim Vihar, Najafgarh, Karam Pura and Sonia Vihar. The civic body also received 10 calls regarding tree felling including Rajouri Garden, Rohini, Patel Nagar, Rampura, Shahdara, Raja Garden and Ashok Vihar. 

The Delhi police issued several traffic advisories to commuters due to waterlogging at Chatta Rail Chowk, Zakhira underpass, Nigam Bodh Ghat, IP Flyover and Anand Parvat. Further, traffic snarls were also witnessed on Outer Ring Road in the carriageway from Vikaspuri towards Peeragarhi and on Ring Road near Indira Gandhi Stadium in the carriageway from Rajghat towards Sarai Kale Khan.

There was also a traffic alert issued for Ring Road in the carriageway from Punjabi Bagh towards Dhaula Kuan due to waterlogging at the construction site of the flyover. In a post on X, the police stated, “Traffic is affected on Rohtak Road in the carriageway from Nangloi towards Tikri Border and vice -versa due to sewer overflow and potholes on road between Rajdhani park and Mundka. Kindly plan your journey accordingly.” Delhiites also grappled with traffic snarls on Vir Banda Bairagi Marg due to waterlogging at Zakhira underpass and on Syama Prasad Mukherjee Marg. Further, they also cited two instances of uprooting of trees at Haryana Maitri Bhawan in Rani Bagh and near Rajdhani College.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Delhi till Thursday and stated that the weather in Delhi on Wednesday will be generally cloudy sky with light to moderate rain and accompanied with thunderstorms. The maximum temperature was recorded at 33.8 degrees Celsius, a notch below the normal while the minimum temperature settled at 24.8 degrees Celsius, 2.5 degrees below the normal

The Safdarjung station, city’s primary weather station, recorded 27 mm rainfall between 5.30 am and 8.30 am. The rainfall logged in other weather stations in 24 hours till 8.30 am was 17.8 mm in Palam, 24.2 mm in Lodhi Road, 26.6 mm in Ridge and 14.2 mm in Ayanagar. During the three-hour period between 2.30 am and 5.30 am, the Pusa, Narela, Najafgarh and Pitampura stations reported rain of 10.5 mm, 12.5 mm, 2.5 mm and 1 mm, respectively.
