Chief Minister Mohan Yadav stated that strengthening and expanding healthcare services in Madhya Pradesh is the state government’s highest priority.
He highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes that the foundation of a self-reliant and empowered India lies in healthy citizens. To realize this vision, the state government is continuously working to provide every citizen with accessible and advanced medical services. On November 21, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav will lay the foundation stone of the Ujjain Medical College, a step that will give new dimensions to the state’s healthcare services.
Dr. Yadav also emphasized that the project will be prioritized to meet the requirements of Simhastha-2028. The college will provide high-quality tertiary-level healthcare services to patients in Ujjain and nearby districts.
The Chief Minister noted that there were only five government medical colleges in the state until 2003, which have now increased to 17. MBBS seats in the state have also grown from 720 to 2,575. Medical colleges are under construction in Sheopur, Singrauli, Mandla, and Rajgarh, while additional colleges are being established in Chhatarpur, Damoh, and Budhni through self-financing grants. Furthermore, the process of opening medical colleges in 12 districts under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model is underway. Dr. Yadav stated that the establishment of 20 new medical colleges will increase MBBS seats by more than 2,000. Bed capacities in hospitals in Bhopal and Gwalior are being increased to 2,500, while super-specialty hospitals are operational in Indore, Gwalior, Jabalpur, and Rewa. Initiatives such as the School of Excellence in Pulmonary Medicine in Jabalpur and the School of Excellence for Eye Care in Indore are positioning the state as a leader in healthcare.
To promote nursing and paramedical education, nursing colleges are being established in 14 medical colleges. Currently, 24 government nursing colleges are operational, soon to increase to 37. The state has 250 paramedical colleges, where around 25,000 students are pursuing education. Additionally, Madhya Pradesh is the only state in the country where medical studies have been initiated in Hindi.
Yadav also announced that community health centers across the state are being equipped with advanced medical facilities to provide district-level hospital-grade services. Additionally, more than 30,000 medical and auxiliary positions will be filled in accordance with Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS). “Only healthy citizens can build a self-reliant Madhya Pradesh,” Dr. Yadav asserted.
The medical college will be constructed on 14.97 acres of land, with a planned built-up area of 1,42,034 square meters. The total estimated cost is 592.3 crores. The facility will include state-of-the-art fire safety systems, energy-efficient LED lighting, solar energy, and HVAC systems. Provisions for rainwater harvesting, wastewater reuse, and a sewage treatment plant have also been incorporated. The campus will feature a foot-over bridge, library building, service block, MGPS block, and ESS block.
The Ujjain Medical College will have a teaching hospital with a capacity of 550 beds.
The Ujjain Medical College will have an initial intake of 100 MBBS students. It will feature four state-of-the-art lecture theaters (with a capacity of 180 each) and two examination halls (with a capacity of 250 each).
