The State Government on Monday issued a standard operating procedure (SOP) in view of the surging fatalities in road accidents during the picnic season in the State.
The SOP contains guidelines for vehicle owners, collaborating agencies, local police and Regional Transport Officers (RTOs).
During winter season, picnic spots and pilgrim places often attract increased traffic flow as people move outdoors for recreational activities. The influx of visitors leads to congested roads, parking challenges, and a higher risk of accidents.
“Furthermore, individuals engaged in recreational activities near picnic spots may be less attentive to traffic rules or may engage in activities that distract them from their surroundings, contributing to a higher likelihood of accidents,” the SOP stated.
Hence, drivers and pedestrians must remain mindful of their surroundings, adhere to the safety guidelines, and exercise caution to prevent accidents in recreational areas such as picnic spots and pilgrim places.
Notably, the State reported 5,467 deaths due to 11,663 road accidents in 2022 as against 5,081 deaths due to 10,983 accidents in 2021. From November to February, the winter season and picnic activities contribute to an increase in road accidents and fatalities.
